Slice an STL in your browser and look at every layer

Pick a printer and a layer height, slice your STL and scrub through its layers, with its height, volume and layer count. Free, in the browser, nothing uploaded.

What you get#

schmelze cuts your model into layers the way a slicer does and shows you each one. It answers the questions you have before a print: does it fit on my bed, how many layers is it, how much material is in it, and what does the thin part near the top look like at 0.2 mm.

Slice it#

  1. Drop the STL on the box above, or open schmelze and press Import.
  2. In the Scene tab, pick your printer: Prusa Mini, MK4 or XL, Bambu X1C, or type your own bed size. schmelze shows the bed at its real size.
  3. Open the Slicer tab and choose a layer height from 0.10 to 0.30 mm and the print speed.
  4. Press Start slicing. Move the Layer slider to walk through the print from the first layer to the last.

If the model floats above the bed, use Drop to bed in the Object tab first. schmelze also warns in the G-code when the first layers would print into the air.

The estimates#

Next to the layer preview, schmelze shows the number of layers, the height and the volume in cm³, which describe your model. It also shows filament in grams and metres and a print time, and those describe only what its G-code prints: one outline per layer at the speed you set. For a solid part a full slicer reports much more filament and time, because it adds walls, infill and top and bottom layers.

Change the model first#

Because schmelze is a modeller as well, you can fix the part before you slice it: scale it to fit the bed, turn it so the flat side is down, cut it in two, or add a hole for a screw. See the STL viewer for how.

Questions#

Can I print the G-code?#

You can send it to a printer, but you get hollow outlines, one wall thick, with no top or bottom. Use it to test a shape. For a solid part, slice the STL in a full slicer.

Which printers does it know?#

Presets for the Prusa Mini, MK4 and XL and the Bambu X1C. Any other printer works by typing its bed size in millimetres.

Does it upload my model to slice it?#

No. Slicing runs in the page, on your computer. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Does it read 3MF or G-code?#

No, only STL. schmelze does not open G-code, so it is not a G-code viewer for files from other slicers.
